Australasian Centre of Chinese Studies (ACCS)

(School of Chinese Languages in Melbourne and Sydney)

WHY STUDY WITH US?

1 Does the school have a proven methodology and pedagogy in teaching Chinese?

At ACCS, we use Accelerated Learning methods and materials developed by Dr Moni Lai Storz with native speaking teachers trained by us. This means that you will get a very effective and enjoyable learning experience with us.

2 Has the school been around for a while or is it just another fly-by-night outfit?

ACCS has been the leading Chinese Centre for the past 18 years in Melbourne! We started in Melbourne in 1992 and in Sydney in 2003. We are also in London. Our teaching faculty has over 30 teachers – we are not dependent on only 1 or 2 teachers.

3 Do you need to spend more money on student books and CDs?

We are extremely well-priced (Approx. $15 per hour for Melbourne classes and $16 per hour for Sydney for adult classes). This includes student books and CD’s (which you can import to your iphone or mp3 or use as a podcast) saving you at least another $60! You can also pay your school fees using your credit card.

4 How much flexibility does the school offer you in terms of classes and availability?

We have concurrent classes at most levels giving you maximum flexibility in attendance. You can attend any available class each week or even repeat the same lesson, if you like. We seldom cancel classes due to insufficient students. Best of all, if you need to, we allow you to defer to the following term for a nominal deferment fee. Enrolling is an easy process and you can cancel out at anytime before classes begin without any penalty.

I have travelled to China 4 times on business since I commenced the course this year, it has been a great help and a lot of fun speaking to the local Chinese. I will be travelling back probably another 3 times before Christmas and I feel well equipped to handle many situations. Although I cannot discuss business at this stage I can get by quite easily travelling, having minor chitchat and I am able to get what I need and be understood in many situations...mostly with a lot of laughing from them. For someone who has never attempted another language and I would hate to say how long it has been since I went to school but with this course and type of teaching, I have learnt so much! I am far from the best student and do not do enough after class practise but still I have learnt.

- Chris Hingston

5 How well known is the school?

We have classes in both Sydney and Melbourne. Also, in London. Average class size is only 8 to 10 students. You do not have to wait till the start of each calendar year to start classes with us. All our classes commences at the start of each term including Beginners classes and there are 4 terms per year. You can attend classes in Melbourne, Sydney or London if you happen to be travelling.

6 How comprehensive is the school’s teaching materials and it’s syllabus?

We have a complete curriculum to study Mandarin ranging from absolute beginner to advanced conversation levels including Chinese for Business. A total of 20 levels! Learn Chinese writing and conversation using a developmental but highly practical approach where students can focus only on conversation skills, if they choose to.

7 Does the school provide any other learning benefits?

We have a social club, regular events (eg ‘InTune with Chinese’) and a regular newsletter. Great opportunities for social or business purposes are also available through our Facebook and ACCS Blog. Most of all, our Chinese classes are fun and interesting - we do not give tests and we do not teach from standard boring textbooks!

8 Does the school specialise in teaching just one language or many different languages?

At ACCS, we specialise in teaching Chinese language (Mandarin and Cantonese) studies and nothing else. For both adults and children. We are continually incorporating the latest Chinese vocabulary and improving on our Accelerated Learning techniques.

"I have recently joined your classes in Mandarin. At the time I did not know your accelerated principles, but having enjoyed every class and experienced the technique, I am to commend you. I had attended other language learning schools and find yours fun, enjoyable to the extent of finding myself eager for the next class, and on top of this I am learning Mandarin with greater depth and understanding. At this point I would like to complement Ling-Sea whom I find has a very refreshing teaching style, and allows learning Mandarin to be enjoyable."

- Ken

This is just a quick note to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed the past 2 years at ACCS. The atmosphere is friendly, the teachers always make you feel welcome and the material is very well written in a user friendly way that helps me to learn.
I would like to pay particular thanks to Ling Lin Cai who has been my teacher for most of 2009, her teaching methodology has been fantastic, she is an extremely intelligent and well educated teacher and has an ability to really create a great team atmosphere in our class room. Ling Lin always puts in 100% and the students all really respect her, I feel that my Mandarin skills have improved this year from working with her.
I will be definitely returning in 2010, as will all of our classmates from our 2009 group Level 6. Well-done guys keep up the great work!
